The Legacy of Hollywood Jac 86
|If being honest, when the opportunity was presented to us here at Silverado, that the 1990 Dun Stallion "Jac Daniels Neat" may be for sale, we were somewhat less than enthused. We, like so many others, were so caught up with the Great modern day sire's of the industry, with the like's of "Wimpys Little Step", "Custom Crome", "Topsail Whiz", "Hollywood Dun It", "Shining Spark" & so many others, that we never really took the time, to look past the name's themselves & divulge ourselves into their lineages. Being fairly new to the Reining/Performance Horse Industry as breeders ourselves, it was always about, who's hot at the time & thus, never really allowing ourselves to sway away from the mainstream modern day sires. What we were about to find out about pedigree's & in particular the great stallion "Hollywood Jac 86", was nothing short of amazing.
Prior owner of "Jac Daniels Neat" Roxanne Peters, sent us a story in regards Sally Brown/"Hollywood Jac 86" that was published after Sally's passing July 16th, 2007. We found the story to be truly inspirational to say the least & thought to ourselves "Hey", "Just Maybe", "This could work out" & what better place to start, than with an own son "Jac Daniels Neat" of an American Quarter Horse Legend "Hollywood Jac 86". A stallion in which Sally herself bred & raised just a few hours to the north of us in the beautiful state of MN. In our research we found out, that an AMAZING # of 27 out of the Top 100 All-Time Leading NRHA Sires could be traced back directly or indirectly to "Hollywood Jac 86" & or "Great Pine" & still, with many more modern sires to make that list like "Einsteins Revolution" LTE $330,000+ making him the first horse in NRHA History to surpass $300K . We also found out that all these great modern day sires like the above, also traced back in some way directly or in some cases, indirectly to the "86" bloodlines, like ....5 Million Dollar Sire "Hollywood Dun It" an own son of "Jac"
2 Million Dollar Sire "Custom Crome" sired by "Crome Plated Jac" an own son of "Jac". Some stallions are known as stallion producers, and some are known as mare producers. Not often does a stallion come along that so consistently and exceptionally produces both. Hollywood Jac son’s offspring have earned over $6.9M in reining earnings, his daughter’s have produced over $1.38M. Not only holding the #1 Paternal Grandsire of Reining Horses slot from 1993 through 2003, he ranked the #1 leading reining sire in 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1994, and held the #1 leading Maternal Grandsire of Reining horses slot in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2002.
The Magic Cross on own daughters of "Jac" with 7 Million Dollar Sire "Topsail Whiz"
The cross of NRHA Hall Of Famer Topsail Whiz, the 2003 #1 Reining Sire with offspring earnings exceeding $2.5M, on Hollywood Jac 86 daughters has epitomized the concept of a “Magic Cross” in reining. Topsail Whiz, the product of 2003 #1 Reining Horse Breeder and Hall Of Fame Inductee Bob Loomis’ stellar breeding program, crossed on Sally Brown’s Bees Honey Jac produced Whizard Jac, the 1996 Open NRHA Futurity Champion, and earner of $155K in NRHA earnings. Topgun Whiz, a product of Topsail Whiz crossed on Ms Tidy Jac was the 1998 NRHA Futurity Limited Open Champion and the 1999 Open NRHA Derby Champion, with earnings of $145K. The cross on Blonde At The Bar produced Who Whiz It, with $56K NRHA earnings. And crossed on Ms Maggie Jac produced both Don Quintana and Jumping Jack Whiz, with combined earnings of over $63K. The total offspring earnings of Topsail Whiz crossed on Hollywood Jac 86 daughters as of 1/2004 was $491K.
The Magic Cross on own daughters of "Jac" 6 Million Dollar Sire "Shining Spark"
Sally Brown has also had great success crossing Shining Spark, one of the hottest reining sires of today on her Hollywood Jac daughters. Sally said she “thanks the stars that for some unknown reason she had been smart enough to hold back a Jac mare a year while in the Jac Pac, for her breeding program.” Crossed on Miss Hello Hollywood, she produced 1998 stallion Jacs Electric Spark, 2001 NRHA Futurity Finalist, and finalist in every major event entered, who has accumulated over $78,900 in NRHA earnings. Shining Spark crossed on another of Brown’s Hollywood Jac mares, Kelinds Lady Jac produced Rise N Shine Jac, the 2001 NRHA intermediate Open Futurity Co-Reserve Champion, and 5th in the NRHA Limited Open Futurity.
"Jac Daniels Neat" was bred & raised by Breeder: Sally Brown Estate in Wayzata, MN & foaled on 04/28/1990 & by Legendary sire "Hollywood Jac 86" x "Lady Bee Great" by "Great Pine"
"Shooter" accomplishments were nothing short of great themselves in an era where $21,000.00 earned would or could be at a minimum, 5 times that amount today.

The infamous Jac Pac between Greenberg and Sally Brown was formed in 1984 upon suggestion from another NRHA Hall Of Fame Inductee and long time Hollywood Jac enthusiast, Tim McQuay, owner of the $3.5 million dollar producing Hollywood Jac son and NRHA Hall of Fame stallion, Hollywood Dun It. The Jac Pac was formed to promote Hollywood Jac 86 as a sire, and remained intact until Hollywood Jac’s death. Brown agreed to go into partnership on Hollywood Jac 86 before ever seeing the stallion. At the time she reflected “are you really being smart for buying into a partnership for this much money with a horse that’s already 18 years old?” But Brown was so impressed watching Jac’s offspring in training at McQuay’s and with Jac’s own performance record, that she new it was a great opportunity. She felt that if she got “3 good years” out of him that it was going to be a good investment. Fortunately Jac had more than 3 good years left.
“The success of HollywoodJac 86 as a sire of reining horses, the selection of a great band of broodmares, and the teamwork and dedication of Sally and her partner Buck Hazledine turned Fox Meadow into a major player in the reining horse breeding business. Through the years Fox Meadow babies appeared successfully at all levels of the reining horse industry. She may have started out with Hollywood Jac 86, but that was only the beginning.
When “Jac” was gone, the Fox Meadow mares showed their own power, (and Sally her stallion-selection skills), by successfully crossing with Topsail Whiz and Shining Spark (amongothers). Sally entrenched herself as a perennial leading breeder of reining horses, independent of Hollywood Jac 86, and Fox Meadow Farm itself became a showplace with few equals.”
Indeed, as the first NRHA Million Dollar Sire and a member of the NRHA Hall of Fame, Hollywood Jac 86 shaped the reining horse industry from both sides–during his own time in the breeding shed and later as the sport’s leading paternaland maternal grandsire. Fox Meadow mares such as Bees Honey Jac, Miss Doll Pine, Fancy Jac, A Great Star, Meadow Jac, Kelinds Lady Jac, Shady Rucker Pine, and Miss Hello Hollywood, the dam of Sally’s great show horse and current stallion Jacs Electric Spark, have produced many of today’s leading performers, producers and sires.
We to, here at Silverado Colt Company, hope in some small humble way, that we can help carry on the Sally Brown/Hollywood Jac 86 story with our own group of broodmares out of these modern day sires "Wimpys Little Step"x 2, "Topsail Whiz"x 2, "Shining Spark", "Nu Chex To Cash", "Chocolate Chic Olena","Jacs Electric Spark" & crossing them back with "Jac Daniels Neat" aka "Shooter" to create our own group of broodmares that will continue to carry on the Legacy of "Hollywood Jac 86" Just like Sally, we to wondered .... “are you really being smart for buying into a partnership for this much money with a horse that’s already 18 years old?” & in our case, we are starting with a horse that is 20 years old & will just have to let history be the judge.
Our favorite quote...
"Doc Bar" means “cutting horses” to many people and "Hollywood Jac 86" became a name that means reining horse to people worldwide.

The Legacy of Hollywood Jac 86
|For the past two decades, Hollywood Jac 86 has been one of the reining industry’s leading sires. Nearly twenty years after his death, Hollywood Jac 86 is still the #1 Equi-Stat Paternal Grandsire of reining horses, as well as the #2 Maternal Grandsire.
Hollywood Jac 86 was the NRHA’s very first Million Dollar Sire, earning that distinctive title in 1993, when prize purses were significantly less than they are today. His most famous son, Hollywood Dun It, is now an NRHA Five Million Dollar Sire, cementing forever the status of Hollywood Jac 86 as one of the most important foundation sires of the reining industry. Also in 1993, Hollywood Jac 86 was inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame, a distinction reserved for very few.
Looking back at what he did as a sire, 60 percent of his offspring were performers, earning more than $1.7 million in the reining pen, along with 1,668 AQHA points. Hollywood Jac 86 only sired a total of 251 AQHA registered foals, a fractional number compared to the average offspring of the top reining stallions of today. Yet, in 2010, Hollywood Jac 86 still ranks #9 in the list of NRHA’s All Time Leading Sires, with the #2 All Time Reining Sire spot belongs to his son, Hollywood Dun It, who has sired over 1000 offspring.
As a performer himself, Hollywood Jac 86 had $6,089 in NRHA earnings, winning two back to back NRHA Non-Pro World Championship titles in 1974 and 1975, and 12 NRHA bronzes. He also earned 80 AQHA Open performance points, a Performance ROM, and an AQHA Superior in Reining.
Former “Jac Pac” partner Sally Brown said that although the flop eared stallion didn’t have a tremendous presence, and wasn’t particularly attractive, what he lacked in looks he made up for exponentially in style, ability, heart and prepotency. Former owner and NRHA Hall Of Fame inductee Richard Greenberg said he possessed “an incredible combination of power and sensitivity.” And nearly everyone agrees that Hollywood Jac 86 had a sliding stop that revolutionized the style of reining, a trait that unwaveringly has been passed down to his offspring from generation to generation.
Hollywood Jac 86 was sired by Easter King, an own son of the renowned King-P234, AQHA Hall Of Fame inductee and AQHA and NRHA Hall of Fame producer. Easter King was a 1951 sorrel stallion who at the won the Junior Cutting Championship at the Fort Worth Stock Show at the age of 18 months, and then went on to win both open halter and performance points and an open performance ROM in 1957. Easter King produced performers that earned 2,631 AQHA points and $22,989 in NCHA-sanctioned cuttings. Of all of Easter King’s performers, Hollywood Jac 86 was his one and only NRHA money earner.
Hollywood Gold, the sire of Hollywood Jac’s dam, Miss Hollywood, was a 1940 dun stallion, known in cutting circles at the time as the “King of Cutting.” He earned a place in the NCHA Hall Of Fame, and sired offspring with 2,840 AQHA points and $285,199 in NCHA earnings. Hollywood Gold was also the maternal grandsire of offspring earning more than $1.3 million in NCHA monies.
Hollywood Jac 86 consistently produced both exceptional mares and stallions, as shown in his place near the top of both the maternal and paternal grandsire charts. He also produced more than just top reining horses – he is also on the list of top paternal grandsires of reined cow horses, and has produced several NRCHA money-earners as well.
Hollywood Jac 86 died in 1991 at the age of 24 from kidney failure. He is buried on the property of Dr. Ross Hugi, who was his longtime veterinarian and breeding handler. Still, nearly 20 years after his death, Hollywood Jac 86 remains a strong presence in the reining and reined cowhorse industy, with his legacy living on through his many successful offspring.
